There’s numerous sayings about how important it is for people to open their minds to the world. Sometimes, it feels like my mind has been cracked open like a nut; the aperture too wide, the light too bright and all the knowledge that I can never reconcile, never set together into a coherent whole. My thoughts spin off like spider webs in thousands of directions as I try to understandeverything.

So I have to go back to being small and self-centred, because at least then I’m halfway sane.

George R.R. Martin on writing women

  • George Stroumboulopoulos: There's one thing that's interesting about your books. I noticed that you write women really well and really different. Where does that come from?
  • George R.R. Martin: You know, I've always considered women to be people.

Once we’re thrown off our habitual paths, we think all is lost, but it’s only here that the new and the good begins.

At some point you will realize that you have done too much for someone, that the only next possible step to do is to stop. Leave them alone. Walk away. It’s not like you’re giving up, and it’s not like you shouldn’t try. It’s just that you have to draw the line of determination from desperation. What is truly yours will eventually be yours, and what is not, no matter how hard you try, will never be.

Shell Shocked

Guy: There’s several projects for you to get involved in if you’re interested. We’re hoping to blah blah blah blah data blah universities blah sustainability blah.

Me: Sounds cool.

Guy: Then, with EU funding, we can branch out into maybe France and Germany. Or you, know, europe as a whole.

Me: Right. And how would it work?

Guy: Blah blah Blah (whooshing sound as it goes clear over my head). But basically, it would be up to you. Just use us as a hub and partnership. So, you interested?

Me: Um, yeah? I guess.

Guy: Cool, see you new year. Enjoy your new multi-national research bank project. And if you could do us some podcasts, that would be sound.

Do I tell him I got fired from an entry level reception job last week? Na.
